Server upgrade? yes, please
so using that plastic case for server... Actually, it's entirely stupid... so the case is designed into sandwich.
Basically the idea is raspberry on bottom, then official cooler with passive area and fan sitting directly top of it. then gap about 10-15 mm and TFT GPIO display and since it is GPIO, it can eat well. and that entire thing is enclosed in plastic box that fits it perfectly, no space left, just fits with precision of less than 1mm...
Well, waaay too many times i would go sleeping, hearing the fans go brrr.. I thought it is odd, given my laptop barely spins that often.
Then i thought to open it... and boy, the display was flaming hot, and on the cooler i could could fry rice. I mean slapping chicken to cooking it has nothing on this.... so I removed the display, which left one side open wide...
Suddenly, no fans spinning. I looked where on the case are holes for air to leave... there were 3 stripes cutouts on bottom of the case.
YES, on the side facing the bottom of raspberry, when active cooler is above raspberry locked between raspberry from bottom, plastic walls from side and GPIO thick ass display on top.
So i ordered Geekworm - P579 PCIe Metal case... and since i would pay for delivery I bought another cooler 52Pi - Active cooler Armor Lite V5 and Suptronics - X1001 2280 M.2 NVMe Shield since the website suggested people buy it with the case.
It arrived. I put it together. AND it is glorious. Basically official active cooler has the usual thick area from aluminium, fan directly above the cpu and thermal pad between the cooler and cpu.... well 52Pi cooler has even thicker aluminium area, larger, chunky area.
On top of it, the fans has less fins and are angled under steeper angle... sort of like engine boats have.
Official raspberry has small, tiny, straight fins with many of them lined up in the circle... like laptops tend to have.
On top of the thermal pads are included for every chip on the board, not just the cpu.
The case is solid aluminium... i hope... and it looks like it went through shooting range on the way hear. It has that many holes, from every side, different sizes. The case is unintuitively larger than raspberry.
So the the rpi would wobble inside, except it comes with drills and screw to lock it in position... and there is distancing pillars from bottom so there is space from bottom of the case and the raspberry itself.
The Suptronics NVMe Shield also has spacing pillars to put it above raspberry, except with more distance... so there is actually space between the NVMe Shield and raspberry.
Genius. Genius. I cant stress out how important good thermal design is.
Testament to it is, when it the fans would previously spin like crazy, now the case warms up (温かい sort) and the passive area of cooler barely gets warm... I dont even know if the fan works, because it hasn't ran so far.
That efficient.
I actually was putting away the plastic case and i kid you not, there was sort of thick grey-ish dust all over the walls... Come to think of it, that might have been ash.
Anyway, now my server doesn't sound like fridge, but is trying to be cricket. The SSD NVMe cards actually emit high pitched buzzing noise, which i was told is coil spinning inside.
So in conclusion, the server has more storage, more stable drive. Proper cooling. And it cost me only the price of the raspberry itself... NVMe cards have become ridiculously expensive.
One small caveat, EEPROM boot kind expects microSD to boot the OS from. So I decided to keep the microSD as boot, while moving root and home to NVMe. Which leads to one issue... the case has cutout for the slot of microSD, so you can insert microSD without opening the case.... Unfortunately, that means also taking it out without opening the case.
So I was thinking of duck-tapping it, since i have became rather proficient with duck tape.
Reminds of these older kits with micro controller, that would have everything in case exposing only the plugs to pins and then proceed to have cutout directly on top of the case for EPROM and people then duck-tapping it so sun would not override the memory.
...Also one small note, Aluminium cases may behave like faraday's cage or generally distort wifi waves
